How to use this calculator
This calculator is built for makers who already have a product listed and want to know whether it is actually profitable. Walk through each field with your real numbers — the value of this tool comes from honesty about costs you have been ignoring. Most makers discover their bestseller is paying them $9 an hour.
Step 1 — Enter your current selling price
This is the price you actually charge customers today, before any discounts or sales. If you offer coupons or run sales regularly, enter the average realized price (your total revenue divided by units sold in the last 90 days). Do not enter the price you wish you were charging — enter the price the market is currently paying. The calculator will tell you whether that price is viable.
Step 2 — Enter your true materials cost
Materials cost is the cost of every physical input that goes into one finished item, including the product packaging (jewelry box, soap wrapper, candle label). Do not include shipping packaging — that goes in a separate field. Track materials costs in a spreadsheet for one month before trusting your memory. Most makers undercount materials by 20% to 30% because they forget small items like clasps, labels, tissue paper, and thank-you cards.
Step 3 — Count labor minutes honestly
Labor minutes covers every minute spent producing one item: cutting, assembling, finishing, quality-checking, photographing, listing, and packaging for shipment. The photography and listing time is what most makers forget. A 30-minute jewelry item usually takes 60 to 75 minutes of real labor once photography and listing are included. If you batch-produce 10 items in a 6-hour session, labor minutes per item is 36, not 6. Track real time for one production cycle and use that number.
Step 4 — Set your target hourly rate
This is what you want to pay yourself per working hour. $20 is a realistic US starting point; $25 to $35 is appropriate for an experienced maker; $40+ is for master craftspeople. The hourly rate determines your labor cost, which flows through to your profit margin. If your effective hourly rate (shown in results) falls below this target, your price is too low.
Step 5 — Add packaging cost
Packaging cost is the per-item cost of product packaging — the box, wrapper, label, and any insert card that ships with the product. This is separate from shipping packaging (mailer, tape, bubble wrap), which is overhead. For a jewelry seller: $0.80 jewelry box + $0.15 logo sticker + $0.25 thank-you card = $1.20 packaging per item. For soap: $0.30 wrapper + $0.10 label = $0.40 per bar.
Step 6 — Enter platform fee percentage
Platform fees are the percentage-based fees charged by your selling platform. For Etsy: 6.5% transaction + 3% payment processing = 9.5%. Add offsite ads (15%) if applicable, bringing it to 24.5%. For eBay: 10% to 13% final value fee. For Shopify with Stripe: 2.9% payment processing. For PayPal direct: 3.49% + fixed. Enter the combined percentage. A safe default for Etsy without offsite ads is 10%.
Step 7 — Add payment flat fee
The flat fee is the fixed per-transaction fee charged by payment processors. Etsy Payments charges $0.25 per transaction. Stripe and PayPal charge $0.30. Square charges $0.10 for in-person, $0.30 for online. If you sell on Etsy, this is $0.25. If you use multiple platforms, use the weighted average or run separate calculations for each.
Step 8 — Handle the shipping question
If you offer free shipping (absorbing the cost as a seller), check the box and enter your actual shipping cost per item — postage, mailer, label, ink, tape. If the buyer pays shipping separately, leave the box unchecked and the shipping cost will not be subtracted from your margin. The shipping cost field should still be filled in so you can run "what if" scenarios by toggling the checkbox.
How the calculation works
The math behind this calculator reverse-engineers your real profit margin by subtracting every cost — including the ones that scale with price — from your selling price. The key insight most makers miss is that platform fees are not a fixed cost; they grow with your price. A 10% platform fee on a $20 sale is $2, but on a $40 sale it is $4. This feedback loop is why "I'll just raise the price by 10% to cover fees" does not work — raising the price also raises the fee.

Verifying the math with the default inputs
Using the defaults (selling $35, materials $10, 45 min at $20/hr, packaging $2, 10% platform fee, $0.30 flat fee, no shipping absorbed):

A 12% margin is below the 25% floor most craft business advisors recommend. The seller thinks they are making $15 per necklace (price minus materials), but after all costs they keep only $4.20 — about $5.60 per hour of work, below US minimum wage.
Effective hourly rate — the reality check
The calculator reports your effective hourly rate: what you actually earn per hour of work, including your labor cost plus profit. The formula is:

Using the defaults: ($15 + $4.20) / 0.75 hours = $25.60/hour. That number tells you whether your product is paying you a living wage. If it falls below your target hourly rate, the product is underpriced — even if the margin looks "OK" by craft standards. Margin and hourly rate are different lenses: margin tells you if the business is sustainable; hourly rate tells you if the work is worth your time.
True break-even — accounting for fee-on-price feedback
Naive break-even is just totalCost ($30.80 in the example). But that is wrong, because if you lower the price to $30.80, the platform fee also drops — so the actual break-even price is lower. The true break-even solves for the price where profit equals zero, accounting for the fee-on-price feedback:

Using the defaults: ($27 + $0.30) / (1 − 0.10) = $27.30 / 0.90 = $30.33. The true break-even is $30.33, not $30.80. The difference is small at this scale but grows dramatically with higher fee percentages or larger payment flat fees.
Recommended price for 30% margin — same closed-form math
To find the price that delivers a 30% margin after all fees, extend the break-even formula:

Using the defaults: ($27 + $0.30) / (1 − 0.30 − 0.10) = $27.30 / 0.60 = $45.50. To hit a 30% margin, the seller needs to raise the price from $35 to $45.50 — a 30% increase. That is a big jump, but it is the math. Either raise the price, cut costs, or accept that this product will never deliver a sustainable margin.
What the pricing signal tells you
The calculator returns a pricing signal based on your margin. Below 0%: you are losing money on every sale. 0-15%: thin margin, vulnerable to surprise costs. 15-25%: OK but below the craft floor. 25%+: healthy. These thresholds are not arbitrary — they are the levels at which craft businesses typically survive or fail. A 12% margin product cannot absorb a single return or shipping-damage replacement without going negative for the month.

This is the maker who tells everyone their bestseller is "flying off the shelves" — and is mystified when their bank account keeps shrinking. The break-even is $38.11; the current price is $22. The recommended price for 30% margin is $57.17 — almost triple what they are charging. The honest answer is that this product cannot be sold profitably at $22 with free shipping. Either raise price, end free shipping, or discontinue.
What to do when your margin is too thin
