How to use this calculator
This calculator is built for working dropshipping sellers who want to stop guessing at retail prices. Walk through each field in order and enter real numbers, not optimistic ones. The single most expensive mistake in dropshipping is launching a product at $19.99 that loses $2 per sale when $24.99 would have been profitable — and discovering the loss only after $1,500 in ad spend.
Step 1 — Enter your supplier cost per unit
This is the wholesale price your dropshipping supplier charges you for one unit, not including shipping. AliExpress suppliers typically quote $3-15 for consumer goods. CJ Dropshipping offers slightly better pricing ($2-12) with faster shipping. DropCommerce and Spocket focus on US/EU suppliers with higher costs ($10-30) but faster delivery. Private-label suppliers in China quote $5-25 for custom-branded products at MOQ. Be honest about quality control rejects — if 3% of units arrive defective and you refund the customer, your effective supplier cost is 3% higher than the quoted price.
Step 2 — Add supplier shipping to the customer
This is what the supplier charges to ship one unit directly to your customer. AliExpress ePacket shipping (now mostly discontinued) used to cost $1-3 with 15-25 day delivery. CJ Dropshipping offers $3-6 shipping with 7-12 day delivery via 4PX or YunExpress. Spocket and DropCommerce ship from US/EU warehouses at $4-8 with 3-7 day delivery. The shipping cost matters because if you offer free shipping, it comes out of your margin. If you charge customers for shipping, it does not affect per-sale profit but does affect conversion rate.
Step 3 — Enter your platform fee percentage
This is the percentage fee your sales platform charges on each transaction. Shopify charges 0% transaction fee (if using Shopify Payments) plus 2.9% + $0.30 payment processing on the Basic plan. WooCommerce charges only payment processing (no platform fee). Etsy charges 6.5% transaction fee. eBay charges 10-13% final value fee depending on category. Amazon dropshipping (rare and restricted) charges 8-15% referral fee. For Shopify, set platform fee to 0% and include the payment processing in the payment fields. Step 4 — Enter your advertising cost per sale (CPA)
This is your Customer Acquisition Cost — the average ad spend required to generate one sale. Step 5 — Set your returns rate

Step 6 — Verify payment processing percentages
Payment processing fees are charged by Stripe, Shopify Payments, PayPal, or whatever payment gateway you use. The standard rate is 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction for online sales. Shopify Payments offers 2.4-2.9% + $0.30 depending on plan tier. PayPal charges 4% + $0.30 for international transactions. Some platforms (Etsy, eBay) bundle payment processing into their transaction fee. Enter the actual percentage and flat fee from your payment gateway — a 0.5% mistake on a $25 product is $0.125 per sale, $250 per month at 200 orders.
Step 7 — Set your target margin
Profit margin is the percentage of the retail price you keep as profit after every cost and fee. 20% is healthy for dropshipping. 15% is break-even-ish. Below 12%, you are losing money when surprise costs hit (chargebacks, ad spend spikes, supplier price increases). For a new product launch, 50-200 orders/month is realistic for a winning product with $5-10/day ad spend. Established products can reach 500-2,000 orders/month with scaled ad spend. Be honest — most new sellers overestimate monthly sales by 3-5x. Use the lower end of realistic for new launches, and adjust based on actual trailing 30-day performance after launch.
How the calculation works
The math behind this calculator solves the central problem of dropshipping profitability: your advertising cost is a fixed dollar amount per sale, but your platform and payment fees scale with your retail price. This creates a pricing feedback loop — raise the price to cover advertising, and the percentage fees go up too. To calculate the exact retail price needed to hit a target margin, you cannot simply add a markup — you must solve a closed-form equation that accounts for the circularity.
The core profit formula
For a given retail price, per-sale profit is:

The recommended price formula
To hit a target margin (profit as a percentage of retail price), add the target margin percentage to the denominator:

This is a closed-form solution — no iteration needed. If platformFeePct + paymentProcessingPct + targetMarginPct exceeds 100%, the calculator flags the configuration as non-viable. This happens most often when sellers target 30%+ margins on platforms with 10%+ fees (eBay, Amazon) — there is no price that achieves that combination.
Why ROAS matters more than per-sale profit
ROAS (Return on Ad Spend) is your retail price divided by your advertising cost per sale. A $25 retail with $5 ad cost per sale gives 5x ROAS — every $1 in ads returns $5 in revenue. ROAS matters because it determines how much you can scale. At 5x ROAS, spending $1,000/month on ads generates $5,000 in revenue and (at 20% margin) $1,000 in profit. At 3x ROAS, the same $1,000 generates only $3,000 in revenue and $600 in profit. The dropshipping industry benchmarks: 2x ROAS is breakeven for most products (ad cost consumes all margin), 3x ROAS is marginal, 4x ROAS is healthy, 5x+ ROAS is scalable. What the breakeven price tells you that profit does not
Breakeven is the floor below which you should not sell under any circumstance. If your breakeven is $14.50 and the market price for the product is $13.99, the SKU is structurally unprofitable — do not launch. If the market price is $17.99 and your breakeven is $14.50, you have $3.49 of margin headroom, which equals roughly 19% margin — viable but thin. Breakeven is also the price you should set when clearing out a discontinued product — anything above breakeven recovers sunk cost, anything below accelerates loss. Knowing your breakeven also tells you how much pricing flexibility you have for promotions, flash sales, and bundle discounts.
Why returns cost is modeled as a percentage of supplier cost
The calculator models returns cost as (returnsRatePct / 100) × (supplierCost + supplierShipping) — a percentage of your supplier cost, not your retail price. This is because when you refund a customer, you refund the retail price, but you have already incurred the supplier cost and shipping. If the product is unsellable (damaged, opened, expired), you lose the full supplier cost plus shipping. If the product is sellable, you can re-ship it to a new customer — but you incur a second shipping cost and the original customer's refund. Either way, the per-order returns cost averages to roughly the returns rate multiplied by the supplier cost. This is a conservative but accurate model for most dropshipping categories.
